Gases can have various effects on the player and other living entities. These effects can be triggered by being inside gas, and some can be triggered by having the player's head completely covered in gas.
- Blindness: Certain gases will have a blinding effect on the player when their head is completely covered in gas. The player's vision will slowly go down until nearly everything goes black. How quickly the player is blinded depends on the properties of the gas. When outside gas, the effect will recede slowly. The player will not be blinded when wearing an Advanced Respirator. This effect can also be triggered by Snapdragons.
- Suffocation: Many gases are able to suffocate the player if the player keeps their head completely covered in gas for extended periods of time. If the player stays inside the gas for too long, they will start taking damage, or be poisoned, depending on the gas. The player will not suffocate if a Primitive Respirator or an Advanced Respirator is worn, but the respirator will be slowly damaged.
- Slowness: If the player suffocates in certain gases, the player will be slowed gradually to a minimum of 10% movement speed. When outside gas, the effect will recede slowly. This effect can also be triggered by Snapdragons.
- Damage dealing: Some gases deal damage on contact, such as Void Gas. Ignited Gas will set entities on fire on contact.
